Attire, Hair, & Jewelry

MCW Performing Arts is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for every student.  All students are celebrated and respected for who they are, and are free to choose from any combination of the options listed for their class genre/level below. We have chosen these attire guidelines with all dancer's safety and comfort as a top priority. The following is a guide to appropriate clothing and hair for dance classes. If the suggested attire does not meet your dancers needs, please contact the studio. We are happy to make reasonable accommodations where needed.

General requirements for all classes:

Attire: Please wear appropriate shoes to class (or bare feet as specified), Tights or socks without shoes are too slippery to dance in safely. Please wear clothes that fit properly so that teachers can see alignment and dancers are not distracted by their attire. Students may also need proper athletic undergarments (ex: sports bra, dance belt).

Hair: For safety, secure long hair up in a ponytail, bun, or french/dutch braids. Please pull short hair away from the face with clips or a headband. Please reach out to the studio if you need suggestions or tutorials for hair.

Jewelry: Please leave jewelry at home. Large objects (hoop earrings, necklaces, bracelets) can be distracting and potentially dangerous when moving near dance mates.

Gum: Gum is not allowed in the dance studio.

Specific class requirements

Giggles & Wiggles/Dance w/Me: Any clothing that you and your dancer can move easily in. For dancers, bare feet is best, or socks with grips. Socks without grips or full footed tights can be slippery. For adults, socks or bare feet are recommended. If adults require a shoe, clean sneakers or dance shoes are welcome.

Creative Movement Classes: 

  • Sea Beatz Hip Hop: Any combination of a t-shirt, tank top, or bra top and athletic pants (leggings, joggers, sweatpants). Clean shoes designated for indoor use only are required to keep our floors clean.

  • Mermaids in Ballet: Leotard of any color or a fitted solid colored t-shirt/tank top. Skin tone convertible tights or fitted pants/shorts/leggings. Ballet skirts or athletic shorts may be worn over leotard/leggings. Skin tone no-tie ballet shoes to coordinate with tights/shorts or black no-tie ballet shoes to coordinate with leggings/pants.

  • Mermaid Party Tap: Leotard in any color or a fitted solid colored t-shirt/tank top. Skin tone convertible tights or fitted pants/shorts/leggings. Ballet skirts or athletic shorts may be worn over leotard/leggings. Black patent leather Velcro tap shoes.

  • Flips & Flippers: Leotard/biketard in any color or a fitted solid colored t-shirt/tank top. Skin tone convertible/stirrup tights or fitted pants/shorts/leggings. For safety reasons, please avoid skirts/dresses. Athletic shorts may be worn over leotard or leggings. Bare feet.

Acro: Leotard/biketard in any color or a fitted solid colored t-shirt/tank top. Skin tone convertible/stirrup tights or fitted pants/shorts/leggings. For safety reasons, please avoid skirts/dresses. Athletic shorts may be worn over leotard/leggings. Hair must be secure away from the face. Bare feet.

Ballet: Leotard of any color or a fitted solid colored t-shirt or tank top. Skin tone convertible tights or fitted pants/shorts/leggings. Ballet skirts may be worn over leotard/leggings. Skin tone ballet shoes to coordinate with tights or black no tie ballet shoes to coordinate with leggings/pants. 

  • 3.5-6 years: Leather ballet shoes

  • 7+ & Competition: Canvas ballet shoes. Long hair should be pulled into a secure ballet bun.

Hip Hop:  Any combination of a t-shirt, tank top, or bra top and athletic pants (leggings, joggers, sweatpants). Clean shoes designated for indoor use only are required to keep our floors clean. If a dancer is in Hip Hop followed by another style of dance, they are asked to refer to the other styles dress code first.​​

Jazz/Lyrical: Leotard in any color or a fitted solid colored t-shirt/tank top. Skin tone convertible tights or fitted pants/shorts/leggings. Ballet skirts/athletic shorts may be worn over leotard/leggings. Skin tone no-tie jazz shoes to coordinate with tights or black no-tie jazz shoes to coordinate with leggings/pants.

Tap: Leotard in any color or a fitted solid colored t-shirt/tank top. Ballet skirts/athletic shorts may be worn over leotard/leggings. Skin tone convertible tights or fitted pants/shorts/leggings. 

  • 3.5-6 years: Black patent leather Velcro tap shoes

  • 7+ & Competition Tap: Black leather lace up Oxford style tap shoes
